Boston Celtics: 3 options with the No. 14 pick in the NBA draft
Boston Celtics NBA draft option No. 3: Aaron Nesmith
In options one and two, we covered two spots where the Celtics will look to improve. That’s at the center position and the back-up point guard slot. The other need is wing depth, with shooting/scoring also required. Aaron Nesmith from Vanderbilt fits these needs and would be a solid selection for the Celtics with the No. 14 pick.
Nesmith spent two years at Vanderbilt, developing into one of the best scorers in the nation in his sophomore year. Over the 14 games he played in his sophomore season he averaged 23.0 points on 51.2 percent shooting from the floor and 50.0 percent from behind the arc. He can score efficiently from 3-point range, off the dribble, and is effective off the ball as well and this looks like it will translate at the next level. He brings that wing depth needed to back up Brown, Tatum, and Gordon Hayward, as well as the scoring that the second unit requires.
His abilities to play off the ball and space the floor are important ones, that would allow him to be plugged into different lineups that the Celtics put out. He’s not just a shooter, as he’s also a high IQ player when it comes to defense, which will be important when he comes into games so that there are no glaring holes on the defensive end.
He can be that spark that the Celtics have been looking for off the bench, and you can see him as the guy that makes a name for himself down the stretch in playoff games, scoring three 3-pointers in just a few minutes off the bench.
Which need the Celtics will look to fulfill with the No. 14 pick will be very interesting. There’ll be plenty of options there. Getting a wing player like Nesmith would remove the need to have to over-pay a similar player through free agency. It’s going to be an important draft for the Celtics as they look to take the next step in the 2020-21 season.
