Boston Celtics NBA draft option No.1: Cole Anthony

Cole Anthony is a player who will very likely remain available when the Celtics are on the clock. This time last year, mock drafts had Anthony as a top-five pick in the draft, as he came out of high school as one of the most recruited players. It was thought that he’d breeze through college basketball and have a similar season to what Trae Young had in his year at Oklahoma. But, that wasn’t the case.

In the shortened season, Anthony did put up 18.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game at UNC, showing his ability as a do-it-all like Russell Westbrook, who he’s said to have modeled his game after. What he did struggle with was his efficiency as a scorer, shooting 38.0 percent on 15.7 attempts per game. Anthony could thrive in the right setting. And with the Celtics already having so many great players who play as a unit, Boston could be just that. This match would allow Anthony to develop as a team player. He would have Kemba Walker to learn from, who is a fantastic leader from the point guard position – something that Anthony can hopefully be someday.

Anthony’s efficiency worries from college shouldn’t be too much of a concern if you’re the Celtics. He would be playing with players who know how to create their teammates’ good looks and space the floor effectively. He’d have much better shot opportunities, as well as players who can screen for him, and maximize his talent for getting to the bucket too.

He’s an athletic point guard which is something different from what the Celtics have had at their disposal in recent times. He would provide that depth at the one-spot for Kemba, which is vital, especially if Brad Wanamaker is not there for the upcoming season. He would also provide a big chunk of scoring, which the second unit is desperate for.

There’s plenty of upside to his offensive game, but he also has potential defensively too. If you want someone with a big upside and the ability to fill some direct needs straight away then select Anthony. He and Boston would be a good match for both parties if he’s still on the board when the Celts get their first pick.
