4. Re-sign Trey Burke

After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2020, things did not look promising for the seven-year veteran point guard. However, due to Willie Cauley-Stein not being able to play in the NBA restart, Trey Burke got himself a lifeline.

He signed on with the Mavericks and then showed why he considered good enough to be taken with the 9th pick of the 2013 draft. In the eight games he played, Burke averaged 12.0 points, 3.8 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 23.9 minutes per game.

Burke is a potential replacement for the long-term Mavericks backup point guard J.J. Barea. The 36-year-old is coming to the end of his career, only playing 15.5 minutes per game in 29 games last season.

While Burke does not bring the same level of feistiness to the court that Barea does, he is a supremely gifted shooter. He is good at creating his own shot but is also a talented catch and shoot player.

This will be Burke’s second stint with the Mavericks and this one feels different from his first time. In the 2018-19 season, Burke did not shoot the 3-ball well, only going at 35.7 percent from deep. However, last season Burke shot the 3-ball at 42.1 percent with the 76ers before going at 43.2 percent in Dallas.
