The Dallas Mavericks make a win-now trade for Gordon Hayward

Let’s begin by looking at the framework of a trade that brings Gordon Hayward to Dallas:

The Mavericks are a team with a number of mid-range salaries attached to solid young role players. It’s a benefit both for a team planning on developing its own youth, or for a team looking to make a blockbuster trade, and this deal with the Boston Celtics definitely qualifies as a blockbuster.

Gordon Hayward will certainly opt into his $34 million player option, and this trade can benefit both teams as a result. The Mavs get to flip several talented role players and get  a star-level wing in Hayward who can play off the ball or on it. He’ll complement Luka Doncic better than most wings in the league thanks to his ability to operate as a secondary scorer and ball-handler and would immediately boost an offense that is already the best in basketball.

He also comes off the books next season, just in time for Giannis Antetokounmpo to hit free agency.

As for the Celtics, they solve their center conundrum with Powell who will likely become the best center on the roster when he returns from his Achilles injury (which may well be by the time the season starts), while Seth Curry provides them elite shooting and off-ball play, and Justin Jackson provides size on the wing with an expiring $5 million contract.

This is a win-win win-now deal for both the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics.
