NBA free agency destination No. 4: Boston Celtics

One of the more intriguing situations would be if Cousins were to land in Boston and play for the Celtics.

If this were four years ago and DeMarcus Cousins was hitting the free agent market, the center-hungry Boston Celtics would be the outright front-runners to land him. They were rumored as one of the interested teams when the Sacramento Kings were shopping Cousins back in 2016, whom general manager Danny Ainge had been rumored to be enamored with.

Things have certainly changed for Cousins, but the Celtics are just as hungry for a legit big man as they were back then. Boston’s current crew of centers includes Daniel Theis, Robert Williams, Enes Kanter, Tacko Fall, and Vincent Poirier, a group that averaged 18.6 points combined during the 2020 playoffs.

Like the other contending teams that we have mentioned, Cousins likely wouldn’t be the first choice for the Celtics. But given that their roster is already one of the most expensive in the league, Boston might have no choice but to rely on him and his low price tag.

Given the team’s urgency to find a big man to help them contend for a championship, Cousins would be thrust into big minutes right away. While the Celtics will not be scrutinized at every turn like the aforementioned Clippers, there will still be plenty of eyes on Boston next season. Would Cousins want to subject himself to nightly SportsCenter analysis while attempting to piece his career back together? Unlikely.

But there is a small market in which Cousins would be welcomed with open arms by the fan base…
