NBA free agency: 5 possible destinations for DeMarcus Cousins
DeMarcus Cousins will be hitting NBA free agency this offseason, and there could be a handful of suitors that are interested in his services.
Technically a newly-crowned NBA champion, DeMarcus Cousins released a hype/workout video last week that showcased his progression in returning from yet another injury rehab. There is music, and the star talks about how the big men around the league are now playing in a way that he feels he helped originate. That is followed by clips of an on-court workout, showing Cousins making all of his signature moves and feeling no restraint from the ACL tear that sidelined him last season.
According to the video, Cousins is back. So where might he land?
The controversial big man will be on a mission to rehabilitate his career, and will likely demand only a low-priced contract on the open market. The free agent crop for the upcoming offseason is unusually weak, so there could be a handful of franchises that are willing to take a flyer on Cousins after they fill out the rest of their rosters.
Teams will be wary. Cousins has suffered multiple major injuries over the last three years and will be anything but a reliable commodity. Contending teams can’t count on his health, but perhaps he could provide needed playoff depth if he can stay on the floor. Or maybe he would rather go somewhere where he can have guaranteed minutes, out of the spotlight, as he tries to put the pieces back together.
For the third offseason in a row, Cousins will be one of the more interesting free agents to monitor. If he can remain healthy and regain some semblance of his former self on the court, he could be a valuable asset with a low price tag.
