Los Angeles Lakers: 5 free agent targets to repeat in 2020-21
1. Carmelo Anthony and/or DeMarcus Cousins
Last summer, the Los Angeles Lakers signed DeMarcus Cousins as a “last resort” kind of move. After failing to land big names like Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving, Cousins was brought in despite his injury history as a low-risk/high-reward contract.
Signing either him or Carmelo Anthony would be a top move by the Lakers. As these ex-superstars will probably still be looking at a minimum contract, why shouldn’t Mr. Rob Pelinka offer them a home in Hollywood?
Worst case scenario, Boogie ends up injured again and Melo starts regressing. This is a fairly small price to pay for a pair of guys earning the minimum. Don’t forget that Cousins was an inactive member of the roster until mid-February. Did this negatively affect the team?
Best case scenario, however, Cousins approaches a return to his beast-self and Anthony’s production mirrors the one we witnessed this year with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he finally accepted his role as a third-option and did wonders.
Both these guys have the capabilities to be immediately thrown into the starting lineup. Let’s not forget that they were all-stars a couple of years ago, putting up crazy stat sheets.
Cousins was released from the roster to make room for other free agent signings, such as Markieff Morris and Dion Waiters. Even though they proved to be useful in the championship run, a healthy DeMarcus would be a gem to have at all times.
Carmelo is a dear friend of LeBron and they have said in the past that they would love to get the chance to play together. Let’s offer them that chance Laker Nation, shall we?
