Boston Celtics: 3 steps the Celtics can take to improve this offseason
Boston Celtics Step No. 3: Stay patient
“Sometimes the best trade is no trade.”
The Boston Celtics need to do something to keep their roster together, but the most likely scenario is that Danny Ainge does very little other than a couple of small trades. The Celtics have three first-round picks as well as a second, which Ainge can trade for future picks or draft three players and cut someone on the Celtics roster.
With the 14th, 26th, and 30th picks, they would be extremely lucky if they can package the picks to move up in the draft, but considering how general managers seem to be valuing this year’s talent, there will not be many buyers willing to trade down.
Another possibility is if Enes Kanter decides on his player option before the draft, to do what they did last year with Aron Baynes. The Boston Celtics can trade him as a salary dump with one of the Celtics late first-rounders to stay under the luxury limit with a player like Vincent Poirier.
Last season, Walker and Hayward were hurt, and they still managed to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in four years, and with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown now playing at an All-Star level, maybe the Celtics do not need to make any major changes. At least this logic is consistent with how Ainge has thought to build the core he has now.
He is looking at this team from a half-glass full perspective until he sees something that makes him view it otherwise.
It is going to be extremely interesting to see how the Celtics change over this offseason. Like a lot of brink contenders, the Celtics seem to be looking for that missing piece; but what if all they need is time.
