Los Angeles Lakers: 3 storylines in 2020 NBA Finals victory
2. Rajon Rondo wins it for both cornerstones
In yet another beautiful story, Rajon Rondo has now become the first player to win a championship for the two biggest rivals in NBA history, the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. (Disclaimer: Clyde Lovellette did it with the Minneapolis Lakers)
Rondo’s victorious run with the Celtics was over a decade ago, in 2008, where a sophomore Rondo took the reigns of the team as the starting point guard in the first modern-era super team.
He might’ve had to wait 12 years for that to happen but Rajon is once again a world champion. After joining the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, he too accepted a minor role off the bench. That was what would ultimately help the team the most.
Egotism will usually get you nowhere, whereas selflessness, in Dwight’s and Rajon’s case, can win you the ultimate prize. Rondo is nowhere near as good as his All-NBA self that we saw in the early 10’s but it was certainly good enough to help the Lakers lift the trophy.
Special consideration must be given towards Rondo’s game 6 performance. Scoring 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, it was enough to secure the W and make himself pretty much untouchable for next season, were he to accept his player option.
