Chicago Bulls: 5 goals for Zach LaVine going into the 2020-21 season
Zach Lavine’s fourth goal: Develop a good relationship with new coach Billy Donovan
Throughout Zach LaVine’s time in the pros, he’s had a revolving door of coaches. First it was Minnesota Timberwolves legend Flip Saunders, followed by Sam Mitchell, Tom Thibodeau, Fred Hoiberg and Jim Boylen. LaVine has said all the right things in the press and has never been accused of being un-coachable. However, there were rumblings that he and Boylen did not get along but that can’t happen next year under Billy Donovan if he’s to reach his full potential.
When looking at his college coaching and NBA coaching resume combined, the case could be made that Donovan is a future Hall of Famer. With the OKC Thunder, Donovan proved he’s capable of getting a team to overachieve. In the Orlando bubble, he guided the team to a game seven showdown against the heavily favored Houston Rockets.
Although Houston ultimately prevailed, the game came down to the final possession and the Thunder left with the respect of the entire league. Donovan has proven he can coach All-Stars like Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul to peak performances, and he’s also proven he can help develop young talent like Shai Gilgeous Alexander. He might just be the coach who helps push LaVine into the All-Star game.
