Zach LaVine’s third goal: Become a more efficient shooter

It sounds like a contradiction to on one hand say take fewer threes and then turn around and say make them at a higher clip, but we live in the world of analytics. Forty percent has been deemed an excellent 3-point shooter by the masses who follow the sport. Last year, LaVine came within striking distance of that mark, knocking down 38.0 percent of the 3-pointers he took.

If he wants to get voters’ attention by pointing to an area of improvement in his game, he can point to the fact that he’s hit that elusive 40.0 percent from distance mark for the first time in his career.

If he really wants to seal the deal, he can improve his free-throw shooting and shot selection to join the exclusive 50/40/90 club. This past season LaVine shot 45 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line.

Admittedly, it’s a tall task to ask a high-volume scorer to shoot over 50 percent from the field but Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki all did it. Indeed, those three are all first-ballot Hall of Famers. But then again, if you shoot for the moon you’ll land among the stars. Or in LaVine’s case, among the All-Stars.
