Zach LaVine’s second goal: Don’t fall in love with the 3-point shot

In today’s NBA, it’s no secret that 3-point shooting is more important than ever. However, regardless of trends, every player owes it to himself to play to his strengths. While LaVine shot a very solid 38 percent from deep this past season, he’s still only 25 years old with “hops”.

The two-time Slam Dunk Champion must not forget that his other-worldly athleticism helped him make the NBA and he should take full advantage of it. Just ask Nerlens Noel. In a December road game against the OKC Thunder, LaVine came down the middle and put the big man on a poster.

Last season, LaVine averaged eight 3-point attempts per game, easily the highest of his career. While he shoots a decent percentage from distance, abandoning his inside game is doing the defense a favor. Even among the best athletes in the world, his lateral quickness, agility and explosiveness stand out.

If he makes up his mind to get to the basket, there are very few perimeter defenders good enough to stop him from doing just that. The right balance of dribble penetration, interior scoring and outside shooting will all but force voters to include LaVine’s name among the NBA’s elite when casting their All-Star ballots.
