4. Draft well

The Spurs are starting to build their team for the future. They locked up Murray on a four year deal worth $64 million starting next year. Walker is in the second year of his rookie scale deal and is starting to develop.

They also have Luka Samanic and Keldon Johnson who they are going to develop over the next couple of years. They have just completed their rookie campaigns and are going to get more games over the next couple of seasons.

Adding to this, the Spurs have the 11th and 41st picks in the 2020 NBA draft. Looking at Popovich’s drafting history, pick 41 is going to be a solid piece, probably from an international league.

However, it is the 11th pick which will be our focus today. Due to it being a later lottery pick, the Spurs are going to need to be responsive as to who has been taken previously. If Aaron Nesmith is still available, his shooting will certainly be a benefit to the Spurs.

If he is not available then Devin Vassell is a tremendous option who will have a positive impact on the Spurs defense as soon as he hits the court. His offensive game needs more polish but he plays hard and is willing to work.

The player who fits the Spurs system and needs the best right now is Patrick Williams. This combination forward has athleticism and energy to burn and can score of the dribble. He is a solid defender at college level which also helps the Spurs defensive needs.

Williams is still an under-developed talent, but has incredible potential. A season or two under the tutelage of Popovich will see him trending in the right direction. The Spurs are not going to compete for a championship any time soon, they are really building for the future.
