Will Giannis Antetokounmpo sign the supermax extension this offseason?

Of course, the largest question throughout the entire offseason will be whether Giannis Antetokounmpo signs the estimated five-year, $254 million supermax contract extension that the Milwaukee Bucks will offer without a doubt.

It’s a question that’s been lingering around for the last two seasons now, which has caused relentless rumors and speculation across various media platforms. Giannis’ decision will shape the future outlook of the league, so there’s no surprise regarding the amount of clickbait relating to the situation.

The truth is that Giannis loves the city of Milwaukee, wants to bring a championship to Milwaukee, wants to raise his family in Milwaukee, and has hinted that he would prefer to stay in Milwaukee long-term. Every indication has pointed to Giannis eventually re-signing with the Bucks.

Although, the main factor leading up to the decision will become whether the Milwaukee Bucks can build a championship-caliber team around Giannis. As a result, Giannis may be hesitant to commit to the Bucks long-term right now, meaning the answer to the enormous question of Giannis signing an extension this offseason would likely be no, at least for now.

Milwaukee has to prove to Giannis that they can form a championship team around him, which increases the emphasis of how important it truly is for the Bucks to improve their supporting cast behind their MVP this offseason.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry recently spoke with Giannis during a three-hour lunch about how to improve the roster, which Lasry would explain how the team is willing to spend into the luxury tax. Needless to say, the Bucks will do everything in their power to keep Giannis satisfied in Milwaukee.

To sum it up, Giannis seems unlikely to sign the supermax extension this offseason, but it is more likely that he will sign it once he becomes a free agent in 2021 or possibly even during the 2020-21 season. As long as the Milwaukee Bucks build a squad that legitimately competes for a championship, Giannis should be staying put in Milwaukee for years to come with hopes of bringing a title to the city.

Through free agency and the trade market specifically, the 2020 offseason will be an essential factor toward Giannis’ decision and the future outlook of the Milwaukee Bucks.
