Houston Rockets grade: Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook‘s inaugural season as a Houston Rocket was full of ups-and-downs. Westbrook started the season off slowly to taking off and having one of the most impressive stretches of about 40 games that any player had all season before the season was paused. But in the bubble during a seeding game, Westbrook suffered a knee injury and never really returned to being himself in the playoffs.

Despite this rollercoaster of a season, Westbrook put up some very nice numbers. Westbrook averaged 27.2 points per game, which was 4.3 more points than he averaged last season in OKC. Westbrook also had a historic stretch in which he scored 20 or more points in 36 straight games.

On top of that, Westbrook shot a career-best 47.2 percent from the field in the regular season. Westbrook’s high shooting percentage can largely be attributed to substantially decreasing the number of 3-pointers he took per game, especially since he has not shot over 30 percent from deep since his 2016-2017 MVP season.

After three consecutive seasons of averaging a triple-double, Westbrook’s assist and rebound totals went down this year but were still solid as he averaged seven assists and 7.9 rebounds per game.

Overall, Westbrook put up good numbers but was inconsistent down the stretch of the season, especially in the playoffs, which is a big reason why the Rockets are currently watching the rest of the playoffs from home.
