Going into year two, the Detroit Pistons would like to see some progression from Sekou Doumbouya. Here are three goals for him in his second season.

The Detroit Pistons believed themselves gifted with a diamond in the rough when Sekou Doumbouya dropped to them with the 15th pick in the 2019-20 NBA draft. Incredibly raw and young, Doumbouya was expected to go in the top 10 by most draft projections, and the opportunity to grab him in the middle of the first round was too good to pass up for the Pistons.

He had a season kind of like you’d expect for a then-18-year-old and the youngest player in the NBA. Doumbouya had highs and lows, from standing his ground on a West Coast road trip, all the way to disappearing for most of the final two months of the season.

Nobody expected Doumbouya to be a star in his first few years, if ever, but some progress is needed. We’ll go over three main goals for him gong into his second season.

1. Get that shot going

Doumbouya wasn’t drafted to be a sharpshooter, but you’d like to think that with some work he could do better. He certainly couldn’t do worse than his final 23-game stretch when he shot 30.8 percent from the floor and 24.2 percent from 3-point range. On the other hand, he shot 54.4 percent from the floor and 41.4 percent from long range in the eight-game stretch including his great West Coast run, so while both samples are small, you can see there’s something there.

It’s going to be a whole lot easier for head coach Dwane Casey to keep Doumbouya on the floor when his shots start dropping.
