2. Play off the ball

When the Detroit Pistons really got rolling in 2018-19 en route to a playoff appearance, it wasn’t all about Blake Griffin. At their best, he was able to play off the ball and let his teammates take the lead. Some of that was a result of his ailing knee continuing to deteriorate, but a portion could be credited to Dwane Casey better assessing how to use his players.

Of course, 2018-19 seems like a very long time ago, and most of the lead players on that roster are no longer on the team. Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson, whose pick-and-roll attack has been a feature since Jackson came to town at the 2014-15 trade deadline, both departed the team in February. Other than Luke Kennard and Derrick Rose there isn’t much in the way of offensive talent on this, roster, but that will change one way or another when free agency begins.

Ideally, the Pistons will retool this team in such a fashion that Griffin doesn’t have to be the first, second and third scoring option. It’ll give them more versatility in their offense and most importantly it will help preserve Griffin’s health and energy.
