Detroit Pistons: 4 reason to make a trade for Lonzo Ball
By Corey Rausch
Flexibility
Looking at the off the court impact of trading for a player like Lonzo Ball, the options get even more flexible here. Rather than needing to prioritize a guard in the draft or in free agency, Detroit would be getting ahead of the game with a guard that fits their timeline.
They would be able to consider prospects like Onyeka Okongwu, Devin Vassell or Isaac Okoro with a little more roster freedom. They would have an elite playmaker in place to make the transition to the league even easier for any of these pending rookies.
Furthermore, if the Pistons are not looking to spend their cap space on a starting guard, they can take more chances on available young prospects or absorb even more future financial obligations in the interest of bringing in additional draft picks for the future.
Getting the first crack at Lonzo Ball in restricted free agency to start the 2020-2021 offseason would also be a boon for a team that often struggles to be a free agent destination. They would get a season to see how he fits with the rest of the team and would then negotiate with a transcendent young talent from a position of leverage.
