5. Draft well

The Atlanta Hawks have a reasonably good draft history in recent years. They have selected De’Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish, Luka Doncic, who they turned into Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and John Collins in recent drafts.

These players are all still part of their core and will develop together for a few more years. They have the sixth pick in the 2020 draft and they need to add another core piece so that they have the ability to contend for a playoff berth in the coming years.

To that end, the player who will most probably fit their needs, and should still be available when it is their turn to pick is Obi Toppin, the 6’9″ power forward out of Dayton. At 220 lbs, Toppin is a good size, and given his athleticism and great second leap, he will be an energy burst to the second unit.

While his defense is a little questionable, his 7’2″ wingspan will help him hopefully become a good rim protector at the NBA level. He led the NCAA in dunks last season so should be a good pick and roll partner for Young.

On top of that, he was good from 3-point range last season going at 39 percent from deep last season, meaning that he can also be effective on the pick and pop game. His size also allows him to take some time at the center position.

No matter what happens, the Hawks are looking to move up the standings. The moves the front office makes this offseason will have a big influence on that.
