4. Trade for James Johnson’s contract

The Hawks are still in a tremendous position to take unwanted contracts off the hands of opposition franchises. To this end they could take on the final year of James Johnson‘s contract, gaining at least another pick in the process.

There are many benefits to Johnson’s contract. At the moment, apart from financially, the Hawks are not high on anyone’s free agency destination list. They are a long way from making the playoffs, even further away from contending for a championship.

Unfortunately the evergreen Vince Carter finished his storied career last year. He was a tremendous voice in the locker room, having the ability to share many of his experiences to help his younger teammates.

Johnson is a proven leader, especially during his time with the Miami Heat. He could easily move into the leadership/mentorship role with this young team. Of course, given the opportunity, Johnson is still able to produce on the court, given his 12.0 points per game average with the Timberwolves.

Johnson’s contract is mid-range, being $16 million for this season. He has to opt-in but he is not going to earn that money again so it is almost assured that he will. If the Hawks are unable to sign any big names, this will help them get to the salary floor without having to offer unwise contracts.
