Minnesota Timberwolves: 5 roster moves for the coming offseason
The Minnesota Timberwolves have not bee competitive for more than a decade. Here are five roster moves they need to make in the coming offseason.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are an organization in flux for a number of years. Since the end of the 2004-05 season, they have made the playoffs once, in 2017-18, where they were knocked out in the first round.
They have had the services of two concurrent number one draft picks in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns since they were drafted. Wiggins was drafted in 2014 and Towns in 2015.
In the recently finished regular season, the Timberwolves finished 19-45 which was the third-worst record in the NBA. They made several trades throughout the season. One they were involved in was a three-team deal, which netted James Johnson and shipped off Gorgui Dieng.
The second trade was a four-team trade where the Timberwolves traded Jordan Bell, Robert Covington, Keita Bates-Diop, Shabazz Napier and Noah Vonleh. In return, they got Malik Beasley, Juan Hernangomez, Jarred Vanderbilt and Evan Turner. They also sent Jeff Teague and Treveon Graham to the Atlanta Hawks for Allen Crabbe who they waived.
The other major trade was where they sent Wiggins to the Golden State Warriors for D’Angelo Russell, Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans. Russell is the biggest part of the trade and should be the Timberwolves point guard for years to come.
Then, in a stroke of luck for the Timberwolves, the ping pong balls fell in the right order for them and they moved up the draft order to take possession of the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft.
The Timberwolves have the basis for a good team. Towns is a true stretch five, putting up tremendous numbers. Russell is a top-flight point guard and Beasley was a tremendous scorer after joining the team.
Despite turning almost half their roster over this season, the front office still has plenty of work to do this offseason. Here are five roster moves they need to make.
