Indiana Pacers: 6 top head coaching candidates to consider
By Corey Rausch
Jerry Stackhouse
The former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse has built quite a reputation as a coach in short order. Stackhouse began his coaching career in 2015 as an assistant under Dwane Casey with the Toronto Raptors before being named the head coach of their D-League (now G-League) affiliate, Raptors 905.
In his first season with the 905 the team went 39-11 and won the D-League Championship. The MVP of that title run was Pascal Siakam and the team also featured current NBA players Fred VanVleet, Jakob Poeltl and Delon Wright. The team allowed the fewest points in the D-League per game that season and finished top five in both offensive and defensive rating.
While D-League stats can be taken with more than a few grains of salt the facts still stand that Stackhouse was able to successfully develop multiple future big-league starters and helping them perform efficiently. The team would make a repeat run to the finals before coming up just short.
Stackhouse moved on the same summer the team moved on from Casey and had a single-season stint as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies before finally being named a head coach, albeit at the college level with Vanderbilt. Stackhouse has made it clear he wants to be an NBA head coach and is building up his resume one step at a time.
Adding a former player as the head of their bench will help the transition even as he is a first-time head coach. Jerry Stackhouse has commanded respect in every walk of life and it is only a matter of time until he is a head man in the NBA.
