Post-lottery Mock NBA Draft: One week later for the Minnesota Timberwolves
By Corey Rausch
The biggest thing the Portland Trail Blazers were lacking in their seeding games were a 3-and-D wing. Carmelo Anthony played admirably but the team did miss Trevor Ariza. Adding Saddiq Bey gives them someone at that position that could make an impact immediately.
The ceiling may be lower than a team just outside of the lottery would hope for but Bey is a dead-eye shooter (45.0 percent from long range) and is a smart defensive player. The word “overachiever” is thrown around often, fitting in perfectly with the personality of this team.
Back on the clock, the Minnesota Timberwolves can now add a rangy big in Patrick Williams. He is smart and can stretch the floor. Williams would allow them to space the floor from essentially all positions as Karl-Anthony Towns continues to improve in that regard.
Williams is also a dogged defender and profiles as someone who will care on that side of the ball. That is not something the Timberwolves have been able to say about too many people so that would be a much-appreciated change of pace. He needs to take care of the ball more and improve on spot-ups but that comes with time.
Precious Achiuwa brings some solid size to a team that could use more of it. Outside of Kristaps Porzingis, Maxi Kleber and Boban Marjanovic there is not a lot of bulk here. Achiuwa is only 6’9” but is lengthy and bulky with the potential to add more muscle.
The potential is there for him to be a stalwart on the offensive glass and be a solid shot-blocker next to Porzingis who does much of the same. The shooting is not good at this point but the Mavericks mitigate that issue with the prolific offense already in place.
