Memphis Grizzlies: Ranking the last 10 first-round NBA draft picks
2. Jaren Jackson Jr.
Jaren Jackson Jr. was only drafted two years ago. But he’s already ascended to be one of the past first-round picks over the past decade for the Grizzlies.
Memphis selected the former Michigan State Spartans big man with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He wasted no time validating that selection, becoming an instant star and building block for the franchise.
During his rookie season, Jackson averaged 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. He shot 50.6 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from 3-point range. He made the All-Rookie First Team, although the season ended on a sour note when Jackson suffered a right thigh bruise near the end of March.
He picked up where he left off in 2019-20, averaging 17.4 points per game while shooting 39.4 percent from three. Unfortunately, his season again ended prematurely, with a torn meniscus in his left knee forcing him to exit the bubble; the Grizzlies ultimately fell a game short of advancing to the postseason.
Despite injuries ending his last two seasons earlier than expected, hopes remain high for Jackson. It’s become clear in the past two seasons that he’s one of the two most important players on the roster going forward.
