NBA Play-in: What you need to know about the Trail Blazers and Grizzlies
Key Question No.2: Can Dillon Brooks shoot the lights out?
Dillon Brooks has increased his offensive load since Jaren Jackson Jr.’s injury. He has been integral to the Grizzlies this season and more so in the bubble then ever, if the Grizzlies want a chance to beat the Blazers they’ll need everything Brooks has got and more.
Brooks isn’t just a shooter as he is often seen flicking floaters from 5+ feet and a good handful of layups. In these eight games, he has taken 36 shots between 8-16 feet, and his primary choice is the three with 53 attempts.
What concerns me most his shot selection; he’s been efficient in the paint and mid-range (50.0 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from the mid-range respectively), however, the outside palate is concerning. When breaking down his 3-pointers he has only attempted eight shots from each corner – out of 53, and 345 of his attempts this season are above the break, which for Brooks isn’t efficient. He is shooting 24.4 percent on these shots and will be a determent to the team if he’s jacking shots.
When hot, he’ll make the shots but more often then not he’s throwing shots up like Russell Westbrook, an example of this was pointed out by Fastbreak Breakfast when the Grizzlies played the Raptors – in those sweet retro jerseys.
I doubt Brooks will change his shot selection for only 1-2 games but if he is in the corner more often then not making those three’s the Grizzlies might have their X-factor in Dillon Brooks.
