How will the Milwaukee Bucks order their playoff rotation?
8. Pat Connaughton/Donte DiVincenzo
The rotation after Marvin Williams should come down to guards Pat Connaughton and Donte DiVincenzo. Before the coronavirus pandemic halted the NBA season, I would have said DiVincenzo without hesitation, but now the stock of Connaughton has gained traction throughout the seeding games due to his consistent effective play.
DiVincenzo has had his woes inside the bubble so far since he’s been committing too many turnovers and isn’t looking like the same spark that he was known for before the hiatus. Hopefully, that changes, since Donte has the potential to become the breakout volume contributor in the postseason that Fred VanVleet was to the Toronto Raptors last season.
Both Pat and Donte can serve as impactful players off the bench and become x-factors, but Connaughton might get the nod first in the rotation with DiVincenzo following right behind him for now.
Bucks can always utilize depth to make adjustments
If coach Bud opts to go beyond a nine-man rotation, he could dive deeper into his deep squad and choose between sharp-shooter Kyle Korver, forward Ersan Ilyasova, and center Robin Lopez depending on the potential matchups. It’s highly doubtful that Sterling Brown, D.J. Wilson, Frank Mason III, or Thanasis Antetokounmpo will receive any meaningful minutes in the playoffs.
The Bucks may have to adjust their rotations based on who they face since every team utilizes different positional rotations with all sorts of different lineups, but that’s also where the strong depth of the Milwaukee Bucks can become an advantage.
Nevertheless, the best option for the Bucks might be to go smaller and normally play Giannis at the five when Brook Lopez is off the court. It can certainly create better spacing offensively, but it can also be a risk when defending the paint without a true center.
As the Milwaukee Bucks prepare to compete for their second championship in franchise history, their ‘Bench Mob’ will be an important aspect toward their success, and Mike Budenholzer will have plenty of decisions to make regarding his rotations for the eventful playoffs.
