Will the OKC Thunder miss their home floor in the NBA playoffs?
By Ryan Love
How good is the Thunder at home historically?
The OKC Thunder have made a splash in the NBA since moving from Seattle in 2008.
An important part of their success has been the home crowd.
Earlier this year the fans of “Loud City” were named to the2020 Forbes list of America’s Most Passionate Sports Fans.
In nine of the last 10 seasons, not including 2019-20, the Thunder finished with 47 or more total wins.
Of those nine seasons, all of which they made the playoffs, the team maintained a 0.659 or higher winning percentage at home.
In the last 10 seasons, the worst campaign the Thunder had on the road came in the 2014-15 season in which they missed the playoffs. That team won only 16 games on the road.
In the playoffs, the Thunder has great moments, but also historic disasters.
Before the infamous 3-2 lead blown by the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 Finals, the Warriors did the same thing to the Thunder the series before.
The Thunder held a 3-2 lead headed back home for Game 6 in Oklahoma City.
The Warriors knocked down 21 of 45 three-point attempts compared to the Thunder’s three total three-point makes.
Warriors guard Klay Thompson had one of those “Klay games” in front of the distraught OKC crowd.
Thompson finished with 41 points including 11 made 3-pointers.
The Thunder couldn’t recover from the 108-101 loss when they returned to Oakland for Game 7. Needless to say, nothing in Oklahoma City would ever be the same.
Last postseason, the team, then run by Russell Westbrook and Paul George, won only Game 3 — in Oklahoma City — of their first-round matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Including that series, the Thunder have lost their last nine road games in the playoffs.
