Miami Heat – Andre Iguodala

The Miami Heat find themselves in a mostly comfortable financial position moving forward for the first time in years. After finishing the season with a $134.3 million payroll they will drop down to $82.4 million once free agency opens.

Some of this will be spoken for by what will be a massive extension for Bam Adebayo so freeing up some money would be nice. There are only three players on the books who make more than $5 million (not including Adebayo) so they are the prime candidates. Jimmy Butler is understandable safe. Kelly Olynyk has a player option for $12.2 million and has been a solid bench shooter for this team.

Andre Iguodala just looks done. He has only averaged 4.1 points for the Heat as of this writing and he has mostly been a minus. Paying him $15 million each of the next two years would be painful. Even with the team option letting them off the hook for that second year it has to be enticing to move on from both.

The Heat are in a fine position overall as they can wait to extend Adebayo with the understanding that they are chasing big names after next season in a much starrier free agent class. Iguodala is not meant for long on South Beach and this would give them the perfect chance to correct the mistake they made by offering him an extension before he got to town.
