1. The Knicks can use him in a bigger trade

The most important reason to make this move might be that it improves the Knicks’ chances of acquiring the hypothetical “next disgruntled star.”

The New York Knicks are loaded with hypothetical assets. With LaVine, teams know what they’re getting.

Just Barrett or Robinson alone may not appeal to a team, but if you throw LaVine on top of that, the deal becomes much more enticing.

I know the idea of making a trade to make another trade is unorthodox, but it worked out pretty well for the Golden State Warriors. They didn’t want to leave empty-handed when Kevin Durant left for Brooklyn, and D’Angelo Russell was a solid consolation prize.

It felt like Golden State planned to trade Russell the entire time, and that’s what they did. New York has higher aspirations than Andrew Wiggins, but Golden State didn’t have the option to package a prospect like Barrett or Robinson to go along with Russell. That’s not even taking this year’s draft pick into account.

Zach LaVine might not be the former Leon Rose client the Knicks were hoping for, but he can provide some excitement while they wait for one of those disgruntled stars.
