Worst first-round opponent for each NBA Western Conference playoff team
Denver Nuggets: Houston Rockets
We didn’t get to see Houston’s new lineup go up against the Denver Nuggets. Specifically, we didn’t see P.J. Tucker in a slugfest versus Nikola Jokic, a battle between two opposite forces that could determine the fate of either team in a potential playoff battle.
As much strength as Tucker makes up for his 6’5” frame, Jokic possesses the size and skill to remain productive. He shot 5-of-9 when guarded by Tucker in their four meetings — a 2-2 split. It’ll be interesting to see if and how Jokic’s new slender build works in Houston’s favor, allowing their center to push Denver’s big man from his preferred spots.
Even assuming Jokic’s offense stays steady, his defense remains a particularly alarming issue against a team like the Rockets. One who’s five-out system engages all five defenders and relishes the chance to switch a weak link onto their star backcourt.
Jokic was a combined minus-seven in the four regular-season games against the Rockets. That’s not the figure Denver wants not just from its best player, but from the one who’s abilities are supposed to swing the series’ deciding factor in your favor.
If he can’t do that, it’s difficult to envision a route leading the Nuggets to a victory, no matter what the seeding typically tells us about their chances.
