New York Knicks: 5 biggest NBA Draft mistakes
1. 1978 NBA Draft
Original pick: Michael Ray Richardson (4th)
Re-Draft: Larry Bird (6th)
Now, this is the first time that the actual player taken by the New York Knicks is a respectable NBA player. In fact, Michael Ray Richardson was more than respectable.
While on the Knicks, Richardson accomplished some quite impressive feats. He made the All-Star team a total of three times, before doing it once more in New Jersey a few years later. He also led the league in steals three times, one of which was in a Knicks jersey the same season he led the league in assists.
So, all things considered, that’s not a bad pick after all. A quick look on the list of the following picks would change your mind in a heartbeat.
Larry Bird, without a doubt the best player the Knicks have passed on, could have easily had his legendary NBA career in the city of New York.
Larry’s accomplishments are incredibly known to every NBA fan and the footprint he left on the association is recognized by every player and fan that knows the game of basketball.
Bird’s Boston Celtics are, to this day, one of the most dominant teams ever to be created. The Celtics managed to all that just by drafting a single player. Of course, free agency and trades played a major role, but at the end of the day, it is the younger talent that will create those fearsome dynasties.
Take notice, New York Knicks.
P.S. Please don’t screw it up again.
