Cleveland Cavaliers: Ranking the last 10 first-round picks
10. Andrew Wiggins
Including Andrew Wiggins on this list while not including Jones or Cunningham is entirely subjective. The difference between being dealt on draft night versus two months later is ever so slight, however, and it’s the choice here.
Besides, the impact Wiggins unintentionally had on the Cavs is worth noting. Cleveland drafted him with the first overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, their second consecutive use of the top pick and third in four years.
Less than two months later, he was sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team deal that brought Kevin Love to the Cavs, becoming the first overall pick since Chris Webber to not play for the team who drafted him.
Things ultimately worked out for Cleveland. It was touch-and-go for a while, but Love proved to be an instrumental part of bringing the first NBA title to the city. That wouldn’t have happened without Wiggins’ assistance.
As for Wiggins himself, he has carved out a solid career, but not one expected of a top overall selection. His time with the Timberwolves fizzled out this season and he was dealt to the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline. The former Rookie of the Year has averaged 19.7 points per game over his career but has zero All-Star appearances to show for it.
