The New York Knicks have an opportunity to turn their whole roster over this offseason ahead of an unusual 2020-21 NBA season.

Last summer, the New York Knicks shot for the stars during free agency, hoping to bring a bunch of franchise players into the fold. Instead, they ended up with a jumble of mid-tier free agents who play the same position, all signed to short-term deals that could be terminated with relative ease.

Now that another disappointing season has come and gone, it’s high time the Knicks escape from some of those contracts and begin to build their roster anew. They’ll be doing so with a new head coach, one who hasn’t been named yet (although Tom Thibodeau remains the leading horse in the stable).

New York has very few pieces that are guaranteed to be part of the team’s future. RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson are the closest to being building blocks. Julius Randle’s contract ensures he’ll be in the Big Apple for another year. Beyond that, all bets could be off, especially with a new personnel man (Leon Rose) ready to leave his mark on the team.

The Knicks made a couple of moves during the transaction window ahead of the NBA restart (which they will not be part of). They dismissed Kadeem Allen in favor of claiming Jared Harper, then put Allonzo Trier on waivers to claim Theo Pinson. Those are the first moves in what promises to be a busy offseason for the franchise.

There may be seven or eight Knicks who won’t return in 2020-21. Here are the three most unlikely to be back.
