Warriors: Are we sure a Klay-for-Giannis trade would work?
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves…
While all of this is extremely hypothetical, outrageous rumors are still entertaining to discuss. The Warriors have been looking into Giannis, Giannis’ contract expires in two years, Giannis will be a perennial MVP candidate, and there is little-to-no basketball being addressed in the present moment. It only makes sense that these possibilities would weigh heavily on the minds of Warriors fans.
It is our responsibility, however, to avoid putting too much stock into rumors that seem just a little too good to be true.
For the first time in quite a while, many people are pleased with the way the league is currently constructed. In my opinion, Giannis leaving Milwaukee for a large market would certainly add immediate intrigue, but it would eventually suck the air out of the NBA just as Durant did with his 2016 free agency decision when he, too, opted to take his talents to The Bay.
In this trade scenario, the Bucks would stoop down to a six-seed at best, and the Warriors would remain a competitive team with championship aspirations. Without this trade, however, the Bucks would continue their pursuit of a championship with one of the most marketable players in basketball leading the way, and the Warriors could keep their core and hopefully contend for more championships of their own. Most importantly, die-hard NBA fans could soundly sleep at night with the knowledge that some mid-market megastars don’t care about cities with brighter lights.
We can talk rumors all day long, but we should at least acknowledge facts while we do it. There are so many reasons why a Klay-for-Giannis trade is not going to happen.
Even if it did, I’m not so sure it would be the right decision.
