Replacement player options for Philadelphia 76ers when the NBA season resumes
J.R. Smith
I still don’t understand how J.R. Smith wasn’t already on an NBA team, but maybe this is his chance to prove to NBA front offices that he can still help a contending team. Smith is an NBA champion and former Sixth Man of the Year. He’s a proven scorer, and his game is well suited for the Sixers.
The 76ers are in desperate need of 3-point shooting, nobody can argue that, and with a career 37.3 three-point percentage, Smith certainly fits the bill. Things did not end well in Cleveland for him last season, but he has stated in many interviews that he is ready for when an NBA team comes calling.
Smith can shoot off the dribble, spot-up, and take it to the rack. When he is engaged and granted the playing time, Smith is a good rebounder, defender and facilitator in addition to being able to score virtually at will as evidenced by his career averages of 16.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per 36 minutes.
In addition to his offensive prowess, Smith can also bring some veteran leadership to the relatively young 76ers group. He has played in the NBA Finals four times as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and has more playoff experience than anyone currently on the roster. In short, he knows what it takes to win in this league.
He’s been working out and staying in shape, waiting for his opportunity to prove himself again.
