Golden State Warriors: 5 free agency targets for 2020-21
By Drew Taylor
3. Enes Kanter
After the 2019-20 season, Enes Kanter has a player option to opt-out of his contract with the Boston Celtics. However, after only one year with his new team, it looks like Kanter will choose to stay in green. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of time from now until free agency, and Kanter should be a target for the Warriors if he decides to leave.
In the last couple of years, Kanter has become a beloved sports figure off the court and on social media. Though his troubles with the Turkish government are well-documented, his “don’t care” and “haters gonna hate” attitude has gained him popularity across the league.
Besides his comedic and affectionate persona, Kanter has made a case for himself on the floor as well. In his nine NBA seasons, he’s averaged 11.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and has shot the ball very well from the free-throw line for a big man.
Now with the Celtics, Kanter is statistically having his worst season since his second year in the league. But with a limited role on a team with a different playing style, Kanter is still averaging 8.2 points and 7.7 rebounds in just 17.5 minutes on a great team. Though his averages have dropped a bit this year with Boston, he’s taken on a different role, and he’s taken it on well.
Kanter is not known for his defensive abilities, but he still provides enough length and physicality to be a defensive presence around the rim. And with two separate seasons averaging a double-double, he’ll bring down enough rebounds to be a factor in that department as well.
For a player who’s making just under $4.5 million per year, Kanter could most definitely be a cheap option for the Warriors at the center position.
