NBA: 20 ridiculously obscure NBA All-Star seasons that we totally forgot
By Jono Perilli
10: Tyson Chandler (2012-13)
Season Stats: 10.4 points, 10.7 rebounds per game
Remember back in 2013, when everyone considered Tyson Chandler, a premier center with the ability to lock down anyone? We sure do.
It still kind of blows us away that Chandler was a part of Team USA, which is fairly impressive. But we shouldn’t forget how lethal Chandler was as a paint defender, the statistics couldn’t really tell his story.
An elite post-defender and shot-blocker, Chandler was great enough to make the 2013 All-Star Game. It’s also worth noting that the Knicks, his team, were one of the most dangerous squads in the Eastern Conference, it’s shame they can’t mirror it now. A ridiculously strong big-man paired with the most well-rounded scorer in Carmelo Anthony, and a bunch of veterans, truly equaled wins.
Stats don’t truly show how great Chandler was that season, he was deserving of the nomination, since he was a high-level defender, with the ability to convert on offense. He was never really able to jump back to that level again, and despite some efforts to revive his momentum in his second stint in Dallas, he’d never go back to that level again. It was a fall from grace, that happens to every NBA player.
But, it feels like forever since Chandler was the best defender in the NBA, it’s hard to ignore how long it’s been.
