While having four centers on their current roster, the Boston Celtics could make way for an old friend.

Let’s face it. The Boston Celtics made a mistake parting ways with Australian-born, 6′ 10″ 260 lbs center, Aron Baynes. His skill set fits the Celtics needs perfectly. He was a solid rebounder, an effective shot-blocker, clogged the middle of the lane, ran the pick-and-roll to perfection, and is steadily improving in stepping out and hitting the three-point shot. And, he was a perfect fit in the Boston locker room.

Looking at the Celtics current group of big men, it would appear Vincent Poirier will be an odd man out entering 2021. Daniel Theis seems assured of remaining with the team. Same with Robert Williams with his low contract number. But, if the Boston Celtics had to do it all over again, they most likely would have kept Baynes and passed on Enes Kanter, if only because Kanter has so often been watching from the sideline.

The Celtics may look to trade Kanter with one year remaining on his two-year contract, making room for Baynes. Both are in the $5 million salary range so it would be a fairly even trade-off from a numbers perspective.

Having Aron Baynes in the lineup on a regular basis would allow both Theis and Williams to more often play the power forward position along with backing up at center. While perhaps not appearing a major shift from Kanter, Baynes’ defense is far stronger, a major concern with Kanter’s play. And, just having your starting center on the floor rather than in street clothes would be a major upgrade for this Celtics unit.
