Los Angeles Lakers: 4 point guards to target this offseason
By Dalton Sell
4. D.J. Augustin
For years now, D.J. Augustin has been an under the radar serviceable point guard. Over the past four seasons with the Orlando Magic, the 32-year-old split time both as a starter and reserve, but played solid in either role. Augustin will hit free agency when this season officially concludes and should be a target for LA.
In his four years with Orlando, Augustin averaged a combined 10.0 points on 42.8 percent field goal shooting, an impressive 38.8 percent 3-point shooting, along with 4.0 assists per game. While those numbers may not appear the most eye-catching, the guard could provide precisely what the Lakers need to obtain.
Questions of how much of an upgrade Augustin is over Rajon Rondo are very relevant, but if the team needs a guard, he could be a viable option in free agency. In the final year of a 4-year $29 million contract with Orlando, the Lakers could attempt to sign him on a more team-friendly deal in free agency to accommodate their glaring point guard issue.
According to Sean Deveny of Heavy.com, the Lakers pondered the idea of targeting the point guard earlier this season. “The Lakers have inquired about a number of potential veteran backup point guards and one potential target could come onto the trade market in the coming weeks: Orlando guard D.J. Augustin.”
If that interest is still present within the organization, a run at the point guard is very likely this offseason. Augustin could be a very serviceable option to run that backup position, and a probable target to fill this team’s biggest need.
