The Los Angeles Lakers could be in the market for a point guard this offseason, and there will be a variety of options for them to choose from.

LeBron James’ triumphant return from injury along with the offseason acquisition of Anthony Davis elevated the Los Angeles Lakers to the top of the Western Conference with their most legitimate shot at a championship in a decade. Although they appeared to be one of the premier contenders all season long, the one gaping hole in their roster was the backup point guard position.

James took over the primary point guard duties this season, but the team lacked another option that could come off of the bench and produce at a high level for them. Rajon Rondo played backup for a majority of this season, and while he averaged a mediocre 7.1 points and 5.0 assists per game, the team searched the market for an upgrade all season long.

Although they eventually stayed put with their current roster and did not make any significant changes at the position, they could address it this offseason. Rondo could hit free agency if he declines his $2.6 million player option for next season, leaving the only listed point guards aside from LeBron on the roster as Alex Caruso and Quinn Cook.

Targeting a point guard this offseason would be a smart move as there will be many intriguing options both through trade and on the free-agent market. While this season is still potentially going to get played in the coming months, looking ahead at potential future roster moves could be a smart idea.
