9. The fall of Donald Sterling

Back in April 2014, several accusations and voice clips were publicly exposed of Donald Sterling, the previous Clippers owner, racially remarking African-American players in the NBA. This caused a huge stir in the NBA, and the Clippers were forced to go on the market to a new owner.

For a league made up predominantly of black players, the lifetime ban of Sterling was a huge step in the right direction for the NBA, even though it did have its lingering effects.

It’s a massive, yet controversial topic that made the rounds in 2014. Much like the 2002 WCF, an investigation into the matter would be suitable for a fully-dedicated documentary. It could look into how much of an impact NBA owners have on the team and how Sterling was able to have his ownership during growing racism speculation in the NBA. It’s a look into the NBA from the ownerships standpoint rather than a spectator perspective.

It’s a complex topic that’s tough to tackle and would need a ballsy filmmaker to encapsulate in a documentary. It looks into something that people typically ignore. That is racism in the sport. With Sterling getting busted for his racial remarks, does it open up something much more than a lifetime ban?
