10. The 2002 Western Conference Finals

One of the most controversial playoffs series since the league’s development, the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings was a moment in history that has left a deep wound in every Kings fan alike.

In Game 6 of the WCF, the Kings were charged with some extremely incorrect calls, to the controversy of Kings fans and announcers. It wasn’t until 2008 when former NBA referee Tim Donaghy alleged that two referees (who were acting on behalf of the NBA) wanted to extend the series to game seven.

Keep in mind, the Kings were leading 3-2 at the time, only one win away from an NBA Finals appearance. But from it, there has been a lot of discussion regarding the legitimacy of these accusations.

Although the accusations by Tim Donaghy aren’t completely concrete, it’s hard to ignore the controversial calls in the fourth quarter of that game. It’s one of the most popular conspiracy theories in the NBA, and it holds great content to this day.

Theories have suggested that the NBA wanted the more popular franchise to make the Finals over the smaller-market team.  Such a topic is completely perfect for a wide-scale documentary. Perhaps an investigation. It’s in every NBA fan’s best interest to uncover what actually happened in the 2002 Western Conference Finals.

It’s a moment in NBA history that could be worth investigating to see if there is something much, much darker than a simple match-fixing allegation. Some brave investigators could uncover that this moment is merely a number in many other instances.
