5. The 2003-04 Detroit Pistons
Arguably one of the most loved NBA teams in the history of the game, the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons were able to overcome the scary Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
Hands down the greatest defensive team of all-time, the Pistons were the underdogs heading into the 2004 Finals, yet they managed to overcome the odds and beat the Lakers, 4-1. This Pistons squad was led by Chauncey Billups and had a cast featuring one of the best defenders of all-time, Ben Wallace.
Pair that with a mid-range threat in Rip Hamilton, a lanky wing defender in Tayshaun Prince and a fiery forward in Rasheed Wallace, and you’ve got yourself a deadly team. This team is the definition of “Defense Wins Championships”, and they sure as hell deserve a documentary about their fantastic season.
In this day and age of modern basketball, people still believe that this team had the perfect formula for success, even without the superteam aspect people regard as instant glory. This team played with heart, hustle and most of all, with grind.
The definition of the underdog, Detroit foiled the attempts of Gary Payton and Karl Malone from ring-chasing. This was a hard moment of a Lakers fan, even though they were killing the late 90s and early 2000s, but it was glorified moment for every NBA fan.
This team would be the last time the Pistons would ever get close to a championship run again, with the team falling from grace and into an eventual rebuild. This team holds arguably the most impressive championship ring in NBA history unless the next documentary has something to say about it.
