Carmelo Anthony

After having missed almost all of the 2018-19 NBA season, the Portland Trail Blazers gambled on signing veteran All-Star Carmelo Anthony. The move ultimately benefited them as a rejuvenated Anthony proved to be a critical part of their success. The forward will be a free agent this offseason and should be a top target for the Los Angeles Lakers.

For years now, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James have shared a desire to play together, and the two could potentially have their most realistic shot next season. Anthony proved that money is not all he desired as he signed a minimum deal with Portland to make his return to the NBA, and could do the same if it meant joining a top-tier contender such as the Lakers.

In 50 games with the Trail Blazers this season, Anthony averaged 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, having served as a valuable piece to their rotation. The 10-time All-Star proved he can still score efficiently, having averaged 42.6 percent shooting from the field and 37.1 percent 3-point shooting.

Portland’s injury-plagued roster held them back from genuine contention, but Carmelo rejuvenated his play with the team and could be a highly sought after target on the market. If there is any team that could lure Anthony away from Portland, the Lakers have a significant advantage with his good friend LeBron James.

The move would make plenty of sense for both sides involved, providing Carmelo one of the most genuine opportunity of his career to compete for a championship with LeBron beside him. At the same time, the team would add a future Hall of Fame scorer.

Anthony’s willingness to potentially sign a team-friendly deal could also be a significant bonus for the Lakers and could be a game-changing move.
