Los Angeles Lakers: 5 free agent targets for crucial offseason
By Dalton Sell
Aron Baynes
With JaVale McGee heading towards a $4.1 million player option and Dwight Howard set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Los Angeles Lakers could potentially use some frontcourt filler. While there is a chance that the Lakers could retain both of these players, looking at a big man such as Aron Baynes as a backup plan might not be such a bad idea either.
Baynes had a career-year in his first season with the Phoenix Suns, having averaged 11.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, all the best of his career. A significant reason for his first-ever season having averaged double-digit scoring was the utilization of the 3-pointer, as the center added a new weapon to his arsenal. Having averaged 35.1 percent from behind the arc, Baynes proved to be a versatile all-around scorer.
The veteran big man proved to be a crucial part in the Boston Celtics rotation the past few seasons before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in the last offseason. He could be on the move as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. If the Lakers were to lose one or both of their centers, Baynes should be the top candidate to replace them.
As previously stated, the odds of the team retaining both McGee and Howard could be very likely. They also reportedly have kept the door open on re-signing a rehabilitated DeMarcus Cousins this offseason. However, if some drastic change alters any of their options, Aron Baynes would be a viable option in this upcoming free agency.
