New York Knicks: 5 realistic options in upcoming free agency
By Dalton Sell
1. Christian Wood
The Knicks could have a problematic but potential shot at landing Christian Wood if they want to go all-in. Having bounced around the league these past few seasons, the big man had a breakout year for the Detroit Pistons and could appear to be a highly sought after free-agent target.
Wood averaged 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game throughout the season but erupted after Detroit traded Andre Drummond at the trade deadline in February. The trade allowed the 24-year-old to slide into the starting lineup, where he then averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 rebounds a night before the NBA suspended play.
Detroit retaining Wood has appeared to be the most realistic option because, like the Knicks, they could potentially have a large amount of spending money in free agency as well. However, that should not stop the Knicks from trying their best to try and pry him away with a significant offer.
Potentially adding the big man would be a significant addition for New York as a core consisting of RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, and Christian Wood has potential written all over it. While that group might not elevate the Knicks into immediate title contention next season, it could be the start of something promising.
According to SNY’s Ian Begley, “some in the Knicks’ front office are enamored” with Christian Wood, and they could be prepared to make a legitimate run at the 24-year-old this offseason. He will not come cheap as his current contract earned him just over $1.6 million this season, and he has proven he has earned a much more lucrative deal.
