3. Westbrook and Paul connect on All-Star stage
Chris Paul returned to form in his first year with the Oklahoma City Thunder, earning a spot on the Western Conference All-Star team.
Thunder fans got to see the past and present for their franchise meet for one of the highlights of the game when Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul connected for an alley-oop.
Paul, now 35, is listed at 6’1″ — making his first career alley-oop dunk that much more impressive.
According to Basketball-Reference, this was his first dunk since the 2015-16 season.
His Thunder teammate Steven Adams told Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman he was just as shocked by the dunk.
Westbrook had an uncharacteristically quiet All-Star performance.
He finished with six points, three assists and three rebounds in 27 minutes. Westbrook won All-Star Game MVP in 2015 and 2016.
Paul talked about the dunk and what it meant to honor the late Kobe Bryant in the game.
According to USA Today, Paul helped spearhead the new format to the All-Star Game to make it more interesting two seasons ago — creating the schoolyard feel to the team selection process.
The new format in 2020 honored Bryant using his old jersey numbers and created a situation that made the fourth quarter competitive — in true Mamba fashion.
Paul finished the game with 23 points, six assists and two rebounds.
