Golden State Warriors: Ranking the last 10 first-round picks
By Drew Taylor
Jacob Evans (Pick #28 in the 2018 NBA Draft)
Picked late in the first round out of University of Cincinnati in the 2018 Draft, Jacob Evans has had an underwhelming start to his NBA career.
Though he’s only appeared in 59 games without an actual opportunity to improve his game, his potential doesn’t look so promising; only averaging 2.8 points, 1.1 rebounds, and a 33.7 percent field goal percentage for his career, Evans isn’t exactly making a great case for himself so far.
Evans doesn’t bring anything special to the floor and nothing about his game or statistics really stands out. So far this season, he’s shot the ball poorly, rarely assisted, and hasn’t racked up any steals or defensive statistics.
As the 28th pick in the draft, expectations weren’t extremely high, so Evans isn’t necessarily a bust; especially as a 22-year-old only in his sophomore season, Evans still has time to show his abilities.
With a solid 210 lbs frame and decent height at 6’4”, Evans has decent driving abilities and a release high enough to shoot over smaller guards.
Shooting nearly 40 percent from the 3-point line and averaging 2.5 steals & 2.0 blocks in his last couple seasons of college, Evans potential as a “3 & D” guard should not be overlooked. Though his shooting nor defensive success has yet to translate to the NBA, we shouldn’t dismiss Evans just yet.
Unfortunately for Evans, however, his current situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves doesn’t look so promising; since he was traded to the Timberwolves as a part of the Andrew Wiggins deal, Evans has only appeared in two out of 15 games for his new team.
For the sake of Evans, we hope he can showcase his game in the near future and show his true talent before he falls off the NBA’s radar like so many other lower draft picks do.
