Atlanta Hawks: Ranking the last 10 first round picks
By Corey Rausch
Number 6: Kevin Huerter
Getting hype early on in the Trae Young debut season was his fellow rookie Kevin Huerter. League Pass diehards appreciate the lethal shooting he provided around Young and John Collins, being quick to label him as the Klay Thompson in Travis Schlenk’s Golden State Warriors vision for the Hawks.
He is lower on this list than some would expect because he is currently perceived as a one-dimensional player. He is a strong shooter and scorer (averaging 12.2 points on splits of .412/.380/.828 this season) but does not add much else. He averages 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and is not the defensive fit next to Young that the team would have hoped.
That being said, he is still only 21 and has the build to play the role he was drafted for. Huerter is listed at 6’7” and should improve as a defender and rebounder. Picking his spots will be essential as the team continues to add young players who need the ball in their hands as they develop.
Continuing to be a spot-up shooter will be the best way for him to continue to maintain minutes over the lottery picks they continue to bring in. The next player on this list may be his biggest competitor for these minutes going forward.
