Is Gregg Poppovich going to retire?

Maybe the largest question for San Antonio as an organization is off the court. Gregg Poppovich has served as head coach since the 1996-1997 season, and other than this year has led the Spurs to a winning record in each of the 22 previous campaigns.

All five of San Antonio’s championships have come under his reign, and Poppovich is considered one of the best (if not the best) coaches in NBA history.

But he’s 71 years old, and after an underwhelming year (by Spurs’ standards) could be stepping down. He’s certainly groomed the San Antonio bench in terms of coaching. Becky Hammon, Will Hardy, and Tim Duncan all served as assistant coaches on the sideline this year.

And the latter actually served as head coach for a March matchup with the Charlotte Hornets.

If Poppovich is ready to call it a career, it would be the last of dominoes to fall in regard to what has been one of the winning-est dynasties in NBA history. His decision won’t dictate this offseason’s direction but should preface any and all strategies going forward.

No one’s talking about it, but change is on the horizon in San Antonio.  The Spurs have multiple large decisions waiting for them come the offseason. It may truly be the end of an era.
